Quick Steps to a Research Paper

Doing a research paper has been one of the dreaded activities of most students.  Getting a research paper done takes time, and if you fail to manage your time appropriately, you might end up flunking your subject.  In order to manage your time properly, you have to remember some easy steps in making a research paper.

Choosing a Specific Topic

The very first thing you’ll need to do is to get a specific topic out of the general topic provided.  This isn’t a difficult task at all.  All you have to do is to list down all the specific topics that you can come up with on a sheet of paper.  Then, run through your list and see if there are good ones and eliminate everything else.  Once you have a few good topics on hand, it is time for you to choose which one of those will be your topic in your research.

Scanning for Materials

Now that you have your specific topic with you, the next thing you need to do is to browse through libraries for important information in regards to your topic.  Gather as many as you can.  This can be a bit time consuming, and if ever you find sources that are either too broad, or too focused, you can always narrow the broad ones down and expand on the focused information.  While searching for materials over the libraries or over the internet, it is best if you bookmark the pages and list down any important information about the material, such as name of the publication, date of which it was published, the author, publishing house, page number, website, and so on.

Constructing the Outline

Now that you have sufficient materials to back your paper up, it is now time to make an outline of the whole thing.  Make an introduction catchy enough to get the attention of your audience.  This can give out a clue of what you’ll be talking about in the subsequent paragraphs.  On the next paragraphs, you should be able to clearly explain what you have to say.  You can then use your resources to back up your points.  Don’t forget to include your resource information.  After the paragraphs, it is then time to make a conclusion.  The conclusion will state what you have just said, or rather, what points you were able to present.

Draft and Revisions

After the outline has been done, you have to make the first draft of the research paper based on the outline.  After the draft has been finished, it is then time for you to revise your paper.  Check on your draft for any errors on spelling, grammar, and format.  You can add information that wasn’t included on the draft.  This is also the time where you make sure that the resources are correctly numbered.

Final Paper

This is the part where you finalize everything.  You need to double check for any other errors in the paper and correct them if ever you find some.  Check on the resource information if there are any errors.  Check the format; make sure it follows the standard format of your professor/teacher, after which, you can then have it checked.
