Speed reading tips for Students

Not all but some of the students have reading problems, don’t mean to say learning disability but when jugged by a professional they might feel he or she might need a reading class.

This may come to the student as embarrassment and feel as if they have been held back a grade.   While they may feel that they could improve but afraid others might make fun of them if they take up reading class.

Most students can improve by following few tips.  Even students with learning disabilities might improve.  Specially if you are in Collage or University

Tips # 1

Many students take too long with a text book because they want to know in detail.  Most of the text book has unnecessary paragraph and repeat the same meaning or theory again and again in different angle.  So first this method asks the students to skim through the chapter first to get a general idea.  This may need practise

Tips# 2

Since you have skim through the chapters you have a pretty good idea of what is the topic about.  Select your reading sections and read it once.  Quiz yourself and if you relate the information to facts that you learned and the concepts that you have understood will move your short-term memory into your long-term memory.

Tips #3

Many students feel guilty if they don’t read word for word.  Some successful students are able to read all the heading and caption on the pictures and graphics and get the main pictures by reading the first paragraph.  Most of the text book gives the main idea on the first paragraph and the rest will elaborate and explain.

Remember we assume that you skim through the chapters because not all book follow the same code.  College students must learn to work smart not only hard.  If your book is such book feel free to skip sections.  Skip the repetitive paragraphs and sections

Tips #4

To learn to speed read you don’t have to go to a class.   Your eyes need to work too; you can do this by sing an index card or simply use your finger to move through the lines.  Your eyes must follow quickly in a line and send what they see to the brain.

It has been clinically studied that the brain reads faster than most readers can read and that the brain controls the reading rate not your eyes.  Students need more practise scanning and skimming to increase the reading speed.
